Our belief, at the Onassis Foundation, is that education creates the necessary conditions for a collaborative society that is inclusive towards all citizens. This is why a webinar has been created especially for the staff of the wider airport community, aiming at raising awareness about the challenges faced by people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd) and their carers.

The diagnosis of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is rising each year, however it is not yet known what causes this increase. Alongside constant support and intervention by highly trained professionals, it is important for children and adults with ASD to have the opportunities to access – and participate in – the society in which we live.

To this end, the Onassis Foundation innovative program “Boarding Pass to Autism” runs for a third consecutive year, in a targeted campaign to inform the staff of the wider airport community and raise awareness about issues regarding autism.

How could it feel if a passenger processed the symbols and the sensory triggers in an airport using their emotions rather than their logical reasoning? How difficult would it be if signs and announcements were ‘interpreted’ by them as intense feelings like fear? How would they react? How can the airport staff help people with ASD and their carers to cope successfully with the standard procedures of a flight in order to enjoy the experience of traveling by plane?

This initiative of the Onassis Foundation was realized in association with Fraport Greece on November 22 and will take place again on December 17th in association with the leadership of Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority. The initiative is held under the auspices of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens aiming to provide proper information to everyone and to raise awareness looking forward to a society where all individuals will be different but equal.
