The Great Tamer
Dimitris Papaioannou
Dimitris Papaioannou’s visual universe in a lavish photographic album.
This publication presents impressive images from the stage work “The Great Tamer”, following its tour across more than 22 countries around the world. The publication also contains a poem written specially for the occasion by Anne Carson, a poet awarded the T. S. Eliot Prize and the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation. “The Great Tamer” was nominated for an Olivier Award, and listed by The Guardian as one of the ten best dance performances presented in England in 2018. The work deals with questions of whether human life can be seen as an exploratory journey, an absurd circus.
Throughout his thirty plus years of work as an artist, performer, comics creator, choreographer, director, and exhibition curator, Dimitris Papaioannou has always been one step ahead. The legendary Edafos Dance Theater, which he founded with Angeliki Stellatou, caused a stir in the Greek dance scene during the 1980s and ’90s. After that – riding the wave of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games and its acclaimed Opening and Closing Ceremonies, which he oversaw as creative director – Papaioannou broke new ground with performances that attracted audiences in numbers near unprecedented for contemporary dance. His return to a more pared-back aesthetic with the works “Primal Matter” and “Still Life” marked his arrival onto the international scene.
He was the first international artist to be invited to choreograph for the legendary Pina Bausch Company, creating “Since She”.
