Monsters
Poseidon sends the terrifying sea monster Cetus to torment the people of Ethiopia, after their queen, Cassiopeia, boasts that she’s better-looking than the Nereids, the nymphs of the sea. Cetus
A frightening monster trio: Stheno, Euryale, and, of course, Medusa. We could call them “the terrible sisters.” That’s literally what gorgos means: terrible!
Stheno and Euryale never age and are immortal. All the Gorgons have hair made of serpents, as well as long tusks, bronze talons for hands, and golden wings. Terrible!
Gorgons
Medusa is the only Gorgon sister who can die, but she’s still terrible—her wild snake hair, a fierce stare, and a wide mouth with long tusks turn mortals to stone. Her face is so terrifying that ancient Greeks often placed terracotta tiles with her image on their roofs or walls to ward off evil.
