The Uncommon Planner – To whom does Athens belong?

Do we dare to practice a different Athens? A hybrid publication-tool for contemplating the future of the Athenian commons collectively.

Turbulent times create their own worlds as well as their own words. The commons, a noun as ancient as Aristotle’s philosophy and the Roman law, is today being invested with new significations and symbolic content. “The (Un)common Planner” is a hybrid product on the Athenian commons. How have we moved from Syntagma Square’s ‘Aganaktismeni’ (i.e. indignants) movement to the Airbnb frenzy? What does it mean to be an owner? Where are public spaces being led under the weight of ongoing and additive crises? How does the space of public discourse look like in the real and digital world? To whom does Athens belong? Do we dare to practice a different Athens?

Living on the boundary between a critical theory book, a notebook, and a participatory design tool, this publication seeks to illuminate the ways in which the city’s commons are constantly being transformed, while also trying to engage the reader in an interactive experience involving the contemplation and transformation of urban realities.

“The (Un)common Planner” has its roots in the “HackAthens” series of interactive workshops, where artists and professionals from various fields attempt – using elements drawn from hackathons, participatory design, and drama games – to hack the future of a hybrid physical and digital Athens. The first volume in a series of “HackAthens” publications, it lays the foundations for our future explorations.
