Plásmata II x Movement Radio

From June 16 to July 9, Movement Radio will be moving around Ioannina with a mobile studio, broadcasting music 24/7; setting the pace in the city with live performances, DJ sets, discussions, interviews, and radio programs; and creating a meeting point between the local music scene and artists from Athens and abroad.

The highlight of Movement Radio’s program of activities for “Plásmata II” is the exhibition’s musical opening on June 16, featuring Marina Satti’s long-awaited concert at Mavili Square – a special event that will bridge tradition with the electronic sound. The lineup is completed with retro cinematic sci-fi sounds by synth wave producer FONOPTIKON from Athens, reggaeton rhythms by DJ Rosa Pistola from Mexico, melodic vibes by Anthi Kyrkou, and electrified rap songs by VIKKIE.

The next highlight is the appearance of the Italian composer Caterina Barbieri at the imposing castle of Its Kale, on June 29. One of the most interesting figures in electronic music, according to the international music press, she brings together the ethereal with the modern, drawing inspiration from the traditions of classical music and the baroque, minimalism, as well as contemporary experimental scenes. From her debut album "Vertical" (2014) to the present, Caterina Barbieri has consistently created musical experiences that resemble – as Pitchfork wrote "a mind-altering journey." Her recent album, entitled "Spirit Exit" (2022), which she will present live at Plásmata II: Ioannina, has been described by NPR as "deeply psychedelic and, by extension, subversive; like nature, its effects can't quite be narrowed down or predicted." Barbieri has played a slew of the world's most important music festivals, from Unsound and Atonal to Primavera Sound and Sonar, and has presented well-received shows at London's Barbican Centre, Berlin's Volksbühne, and the Philharmonie de Paris, among many other venues.

Setting off from the Old Slaughterhouses, Litharitsia, and the Kaloutsiani Mosque, Movement Radio curates and organizes a wide array of music events: hip hop and rap live performances and DJ sets from Moose and ΧΑΡΑ, as well as DJs Black Athena, Escapade, and Kairo 7000.

Renowned local DJs, such as Built On Soil and Nikos Tsinos will present their music selections, whereas Moses Remax, Elephant, Schizodolls from the city of Ioannina will give punk-rock performances.

A multimedia concert from ONX studio, the career accelerator of the Onassis Foundation and New York’s New Museum, which focuses on digital technologies and artistic creation, will feature experimental club sounds by Janet Davis, Whystine, S.T.M.C, Poor J’Darr, and Voltnoi.

Summer paths full of dub, dancehall, calypso, and lovers rock music by KEMAL and A@H2O, next to experimental melodic explorations by Stelios Lalousis and Lou – among many other names.

These nuances of many different voices, sounds, and musical approaches establish Ioannina as a mirror-image of the entire Balkan peninsula, as a hybrid place marked by movements, nomadism, and the historical coexistence of similarity and difference.

In the framework of the “Plásmata II” exhibition, Movement Radio attempts to build a map that connects geography with sound, the center with the periphery, and the global with the local. Exploring the fluidity of territorial and musical borders, it will discover the life and sounds that inhabit the cracks of dominant historical narratives, and still reverberate through the foundations of the city of Ioannina.
