Session 1 – Face to face

Workshop by Anupama Kundoo | 10:00-12:00

The Architecture of Co-existence Human Resources in the context of Natural Resources

Description

Our built environment is the physical stage on which all human stories are lived out. This physical stage is the historical and ongoing manifestation of human imagination operating within real (or imaginary!) constraints. Anupama Kundoo advances the idea that architectural imagination must transcend design and enter the realms of materials science and economics where some of the bigger questions reside. She will discuss the thrust of her inquiries which have been to find practical ways to fulfil the universal human aspiration for refuge, purpose, and social engagement through extensive material research and experimentation as well as materiality and consumption of finite natural resources alongside their impact on human wellbeing and human resourcefulness.

Participants

This workshop invites architects, engineers, scientists, urban planners, materials designers and companies, as well as academics and students, interested in sustainable materials and new models of housing.

Session 2 – Online

Workshop by George Kafka, Future Observatory Curator, the Design Museum | 12:00-13:00

Museum as Catalyst: Cultural institutions in the climate emergency

  • Description

This workshop and discussion will centre around the role of cultural institutions in the climate emergency. Using the work of Future Observatory, a new research unit based at the Design Museum in London, as its starting point, the discussion will consider how cultural organisations are shifting in the twenty-first century to both respond to and shape environmental and other social conditions.

  • Participants

This workshop invites arts and culture organisations, artists and designers, arts funders and policy makers to learn more about collaborative project design across rural, urban, and global contexts, as well as museum professionals and cultural managers who work across the board.

Session 3 – Face to face

Masterclass by Alice Sharp, Invisible Dust | 13:00-15:00

Art, science, and climate change from the rural, urban to the global

  • Description

A presentation of Invisible Dust’s work in rural, urban, and global contexts, with ideas of how participation of communities and our partners has been fed into the project design.

The presentation will reflect and provide opportunities for learning from three case studies:

Rural – ‘Wild Eye’ – artworks exploring nature in Yorkshire

Urban – ‘Human Sensor’ by Kasia Molga with communities in Manchester and London

Global – ‘Forecast’ – an international programme looking at the ideas that are shaping the future of the planet with global south partners from Kenya and Mexico.

  • Participants

This masterclass invites arts and culture organisations, artists and designers, arts funders and policy makers to learn more about collaborative project design across rural, urban, and global contexts
