Celebrating Greek cinema at onassis.org | 08-15.06.2022

Onassis Stegi celebrates Greek cinema by hosting a major film event and a tribute to the new Greek cinema. This year’s Iris Award ceremony is to be held live and in person on Wednesday, June 8 at the Alsos Theater in Athens, and broadcast live on onassis.org. One day after the Iris Award ceremony, the digital screenings of the award-winning Greek films from the latest editions of the Drama International Short Film Festival and the Athens International Film Festival begin.

The 2022 Iris Awards

In the wake of two challenging years for the Greek film industry, this year’s Iris Awards by the Hellenic Film Academy have set their sights on life and creation, choosing to dedicate their 13th edition to love. The Iris Awards contenders across 22 categories represent 39 features and 65 short films drawn from the fields of fiction, documentary, animation, minority co-productions, and student projects. Among them are two Onassis Culture productions: the film “Builders, Housewives and the Construction of Modern Athens” by Tassos Langis and Yiannis Gaitanidis, and the documentary short “Girlhood” directed by Vania Turner and Maria Sidiropoulou.

The "Big Short Films 2022" are screened on onassis.org
The "Big Short Films 2022" were created during the pandemic, a fact which is a living proof that the new Greek cinema finds its way to survive even in harsh conditions. The award-winning films, which will be broadcast online for a 1-week period through the Onassis.org platform, stood out for their distinctive takes on social and existential issues rooted in the here and now, presenting stories full of ideas, diverse views, and deep reflections.

"To Vancouver" by Artemis Anastasiadou (Iris Award 2022 for Best Short Film) and "From the Balcony" by Aris Kaplanidis (Iris Award 2022 for Best Short Animation Film) are now available at onassis.org
