Movement Radio presents Τrans Balkan Express: Αn investigation into the complex and diverse Balkan peninsula

An Online Radio Festival

The Balkan’s fluidity, diversity and contradictions through their music. The online radio festival Trans Balkan Express is an investigation into the rich and complex musical tapestry of the Balkan peninsula. Movement Radio, the 24/7 online radio initiative by Onassis Stegi, explores different musical eras and genres from Athens, Tirana, Ioannina, Podgorica and Pristina to Skopje, Belgrade, Zagreb and Thessaloniki through a four-day festival for all.

Delving deep into the sonic and cultural history of the region, Trans Balkan Express features a lineup full of twists, turns and surprises, just like the Balkans themselves: new club sounds from Pristina and Skopje. Digging delights and electronic excursions from Belgrade and Zagreb. Dancehall and ambient from Podgorica. Field recordings from ‘panigiria’ in Ioannina, laments from Epirus and choirs from North Macedonia and Albania. Experimental explorations from Ljubljana, cutting edge electronics from Thessaloniki and traditional folk from Thrace and Pontos.

In opposition to rigid narratives about the region’s turbulent past, Trans Balkan Express aims to unearth the plurality of voices, cultures, languages and musical traditions that exist outside of borders and boundaries, that flourish on the thin line between sameness and difference. From Christopher C. King to Ivan Lončarević, Souci and Jaša Bužinel to N/OBE, Pablo Stettler and Voltnoi Brege, this festival will explore sounds of the Balkans of past, the present and the future.

What does a journey through the Balkans sound like?
