Movement Radio and La Casa Encendida present Mediterranean Futures in Madrid

21.02.23

Movement Radio participates in ARCOmadrid with an installation that includes music broadcasts from seven Mediterranean cities; at the same time, it also collaborates with La Casa Encendida, jointly presenting a program comprising the screening of “Launching Ceremony,” an audiovisual poem by filmmaker and visual artist Marina Gioti, as well as a DJ set by Bill Kouligas, an acclaimed artist and founder of PAN records, featuring sounds from the different music scenes in the Mediterranean.

Movement Radio is an online radio station whose primary core is the connection of musicians and people. A year ago, Movement Radio presented the theme “Mediterranean Futures,” bringing together artists, producers, DJs, and musicians from the Mediterranean basin, with the aim of highlighting the ideas and cultures of the region through the people themselves.

In this context, it participates in this year’s ARCOmadrid 2023, the largest international contemporary art fair in Spain, which this year focuses on the Mediterranean with the program “The Mediterranean: A Round Sea,” curated by Marina Fokidis.

“Launching Ceremony,” Marina Gioti, 17 min., 2021

Originally conceived to be performed in a shipyard, “Launching Ceremony” is an audiovisual poem focusing on the ceremonial launching of a new ship embarking on her maiden voyage. Through a reanimation of mid-century archival footage “choreographed” to a commissioned theremin score, the work invites its viewers to partake in the ceremony, as well as to reflect on free movement and lost futures in an increasingly entrenched world.

Music: May Roosevelt | Producer: Jacob Moe

A commission by the Syros International Film Festival (SIFF), realized with the support of NEON Organization for Culture and Development, in partnership with the Greek Film Archives.

DJ Set: Bill Kouligas

Bill Kouligas is the founder of PAN, one of the most exciting and critically acclaimed labels for experimental and electronic music that, in almost 15 years of activity, has led to the emergence of artists like Lee Gamble, M.E.S.H., and Yves Tumor, sharing their futuristic vision.
