The Onassis Foundation in New York
The action of the Onassis Foundation in New York (Onassis USA) for the promotion and prominence of contemporary Greek culture.
Onassis USA aims to promote the Greek culture to the USA public, collaborating with various important cultural organizations and universities in the USA. From the exhibition "A World of Emotions" to the festival for C. P. Cavafy entitled "Archive of Desire" and the program for the support of Greek studies, Onassis USA has achieved a special place in the history of Onassis Foundation, contributing to the promotion of Greek culture in the USA. An inextricable part of the complete vision concerning culture and education, this department organizes its actions based on extroversion and politics of collaborations.
Its allies are some of the most important cultural organizations of New York, such as the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the New York Public Library, Pioneer Works, Public Theater, St. Ann’s Warehouse and National Sawdust. The Onassis New York initiatives address on the one hand the broader audience of the USA, through cultural actions, and on the other hand, the academic community through the program that supports the Greek studies and the Onassis Humanities Impact Program (HIP).
In the autumn of 2020 a joint initiative between Onassis USA and New Museum’s NEW INC, ONX Studio for Extended Reality began its operation as an accelerator, a subsidized workspace and an exhibition gallery located in the Onassis Gallery of Olympic Tower, the Midtown Manhattan headquarters of Onassis USA.
Τoday, as an Onassis Culture project, ONX Studio has further partnered with organizations in New York, including NYU, Games for Change, NEW INC, Rhizome, and MAX, as well as global institutions such as IDFA, CPH:DOX, and DiMODA, among others. It constantly explores new avenues toward hybrid, digital, and physical experiences, having hosted to date more than 18 creative teams that have developed projects presented subsequently at the Sundance Festival, Tribeca Film Festival, Ars Electronica, the Venice Immersive of the Venice International Film Festival, as well as many other festivals and exhibitions, such as Plásmata in Athens and Ioannina.Onassis USA joins forces with an impressive array of cultural collaborators across the US. These are the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the New York Public Library, Pioneer Works, Public Theater, St. Ann’s Warehouse, National Sawdust and many more.
