Digital Material | Boarding pass to Autism
Educational manual with social stories for therapists and parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and information booklet for travelers
Let children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) spread their wings by helping them and their families travel by plane. Parents and professionals, caregivers and travelers, this is your chance – your passport to making a stressful experience fun.
The airport: a strange environment –full of people coming and going, information screens and shops, colors and lights, sounds and chatter– that can be terrifying for children with ASD, often making it impossible for their parents to take them on trips.
Yet, once you visit the airport and learn the procedures one needs to follow – how to confirm the flight departure time, where to drop off the luggage, how to navigate in space to find the departure gate and pass the airport control – it all looks like a game. In other words, there is no need for stress; you just to get acquainted with the process.
To this end, and in order to raise awareness on issues related to autism, the Onassis Foundation has produced information booklets both in print and digital form. Along with the training of parents and children with ASD, the support of the wider airport community staff, and the information provided to travelers, we offer a comprehensive training program with all procedures that lead up to catching a flight. Giving every child the chance, indeed the “boarding pass” they need to take flight.
