Animated video for the life and work of Yanoulis Halepas
An animated mini-biopic featuring the novel-like life and extraordinary work of the sculptor Yanoulis Halepas.
What aspects of Yanoulis Halepas artistic achievements mark him out as a leading figure in the field of modern Greek marble sculpture?
From the painter Vincent van Gogh right through to Kurt Cobain, lead singer of the legendary Nirvana, the history of art is filled with examples of leading lights who walk that fine line between genius and insanity, triumph and catastrophe, making masterpieces all the while. Among them is Yanoulis Halepas, a singular figure in the modern Greek sculpted arts, who is being brought to life by an animated mini-biopic that seeks to raise awareness among educators about this extraordinary, though tortured talent.
Born on the island of Tinos in the mid-19th century, he met with massive acclaim at a young age, spent years in a psychiatric hospital, and was artistically reborn in the twilight of his life, a little before the outbreak of the Second World War. Thanks to their long history of marble cutting and carving, the Halepas family have left an indelible mark on the island, which is also home to a School of Fine Arts.
