Introduction

Knowledge, breakneck speeds and connection, endless inspiration and imagination and choice – but also dangers. Surfing through virtual realities on the net is now part of our daily lives. But what’s really happening inside children’s digital worlds? How do they navigate the Internet? What platforms do they use? What dangers are they being exposed to? How can a parent safely raise a child in the digital age?

From a very young age, children today are no strangers to technology, learning to surf the net early on. Smartphones, tablets, and other devices connected to the Internet are the toys of the day, and through them they are free to discover an entire world of “limitless possibility.”

This wonderful tool for exploration and learning, for playing and connecting with others can, however, easily turn into a dangerous place if children and their parents aren’t aware of how to use it safely.

Seeking to help grown-ups better understand children’s digital worlds in order to reduce the digital generation gap, and to warn them of the dangers that lurk on the Internet, the Onassis Foundation is launching a new workshop series in an attempt to answer such pressing questions as: How long are children sat in front of screens? What is the Internet challenge phenomenon? How does the image children have of themselves affect their mental health? How can artificial intelligence be used as a means of invading their privacy? How can we separate truth from lies? What do the terms cyber-bullying, sextortion, and online grooming mean?

In ways that are singular, experiential, and fun, we’ll be discovering how we can all use both the Internet and technology safely and responsibly.
