What connects a bisected 22-meter planet radiating a warm red glow in Greek summertime with a mirrored techno-temple nestled within the artificial vegetation of an Athens park? Onassis Stegi is back at Pedion tou Areos Park with a digital art exhibition. Two different themed guided tours are available at the same time as part of the “Plásmata: Bodies, Dreams, and Data” exhibition, each focusing on its own “constellation of works”. The aim of these tours is to invite creative contemplation of the issues being tackled by the works and the exhibition’s curatorial approach.

Two different themed guided tours

Is that a Chihuahua or a muffin; How to mystify machine learning

Wednesdays, June 15, 22, 29 & July 6, 2022 | 19:30 – 21:00

What is machine learning and computer vision? What are neural networks and datasets? And how do they reflect the techno-aesthetics of artificial intelligence? How can a machine see? And can it tell a muffin from a Chihuahua? What does it mean for a machine to have imagination? On this tour, we’re inviting you to explore these questions and to dive into the algorithmic substructures of select works on display: Refik Anadol’s psychedelic machine visions, Moreshin Allahyari’s genderless beings, Christian Mio Loclair’s algorithmically generative sculptures, and Cecilie Waagner Falkenstrøm’s existential artificial intelligence.

The body, gender, and certainties

Wednesdays, June 15, 22, 29 & July 6, 2022 | 19:30 – 21:00

How can we engage anew with the human body – with both its limits and its relationship with contemporary technology? How can we reflect on multiple manifestations of the self and post-human forms? This tour centers on issues of gender that touch upon organic, machine, and digital beings that exist beyond the gender binary and outside the narrow limits of both the real and the imaginary world.

By discussing such works as Morehshin Allahyari’sMoon-faced”, we’ll see how an algorithm can create subjectivities of undifferentiated gender based on a collection of Iranian traditional paintings and standards of beauty, while Eva Papamargariti’sAmong Us, Among Others” will show us how digital sculpted entities that seem human, yet also organic/animal, can interact with us. In these select works, the body is made an arena for challenging what we think we know and for sparking open dialogue, encouraging us to negotiate our certainties anew.

Guide and tour co-curator: Elli Leventaki, art historian and curator.
