Introduction

Have you always wondered how so many books got printed before the invention of computer printers? Then this is the workshop for you.

Come travel with us to the 15th century through this time capsule of a workshop.

In an age where books weren’t available to all, John Gutenberg made one of the world’s most important discoveries. He invented moveable type, a way of printing on paper easily and quickly.

In fact, a copy of his first work, the Gutenberg Bible, is in the Onassis Library. How important was printing to the spread of knowledge, and what does the print shop of a contemporary “Gutenberg” look like? In this workshop, you’ll follow the process of printing a book from start to finish—even how metal is melted and forged into a letter.

At the end of the workshop, you’ll get to take home a small stamp with your name on it—a gift from the 15th century.
