A tale of love and forgetting is this dance spectacle in miniature, that tests the boundaries of both dance and cinema.

Hands and fingers

A couple off stage and collaborators on it, the important Belgian choreographer and dancer Michèle Anne De Mey and the award-winning film-maker Jaco Van Dormael present their acclaimed work “Kiss & Cry / Νanodanses” (2011), a dance spectacle in miniature, as its alternative title denotes, that tests the boundaries of both dance and cinema.

The dancers’ hands and fingers are all we see as they dance in a set taken straight out of childhood memories—all train sets, craft projects, tiny dolls’ houses and snow-covered landscapes. The dancing hands emerge as the ideal narrators of a tale of love and forgetting: a woman muses on the past, delving into her memories for the people who defined and loved her before disappearing from her life. Microcameras film and project this miniature, magical, choreographic world onto a big screen, stimulating a visual and emotional awakening in the audience.
