When technology defines our life and our relationships, isn’t it time to start from the beginning? Shouldn’t we walk to the river source? A journey to the source of dance – a journey to what is "ΑΝΩΝΥΜΟ"...

"ΑΝΩΝΥΜΟ" looks back to a time when art wasn't something created by particular, named individuals, but a practice which brought people—and kept communities—together. It immerses itself in these societies' dances and modes of expression, which are rooted in human contact, holding, group cohesion and shared joy. It observes our lives through collective body memory, the experience of passing traditional dances on and their complete transformation into a contemporary movement idiom. It is the representation of a dance which, though it has creators, insists on defining itself as "anonymous" as it seeks its roots in rites of initiation and participation.

The work is underpinned by research which Tzeni Argyriou conducted during her residency at the Onassis Stegi in 2016–17; the material has already been presented at international events.

ANΩΝΥΜΟ by Tzeni Argyriou

“How can we be part of a mass and still feel an individual force? How can we dance together when we do not know each other? How do we handle the shame by being watched?

How do we touch the other?

Could we become a single synchronized body that consists of many individual parts? What happens when the music stops?”

Choreographer’s Note

Over the last decade I have generated a body of choreographic work that focuses on the integration of Performing and Media Arts. A constant obsession on my creative process has been to find means that question the struggles of a society dominated by media. In these projects, the presence of the performers’ body has usually functioned as a device that explores and inhabits a constructed digital reality.

After this technological saturation, I feel the urge to return to the “analogy of the body.” The artistic force that moves this project comes from the need to redefine ways of connecting with people beyond digital communication, to rediscover the connective power of the physical bodies, and to use dance as a collective catalyzer. As cultural form, dance connects us through a physical experience, being far away from the digital culture that seems to be splitting us apart.

"ΑΝΩΝΥΜΟ"'s choreographic approach takes the form of a physical ceremony, a contemporary ritual that recalls the power of bodies dancing together. Taking traditional dance forms as a source of inspiration, we have transcended the formal movements, patterns and rhythms, to focus on the collective encounter of a shared experience.
