Introduction

Using the inventive title "BSTRD" – an acronym for bastard– Katerina Andreou presents a solo about “genuine bastardy”, playing with the ambiguity of notions, strongly influenced by techniques and discourses emerging in scenes like the one of house community.

Katerina Andreou returns to the frugal dance form of the solo, guided by house music and the technical admixtures of various ingredients. Ever since her award winning work, “A Kind of Fierce”, the choreographer has engaged with ambiguity, condensing speculations on gender identity and the fragile balance between integrity and the fluidity of roles in her work. In “BSTRD”, as implied by the title which is an abbreviation of the word bastard, she focuses on the notions of the incomplete and the hybrid/bastardised, and the way they enter the creative process and influence the authenticity of the choreography.

“BSTRD” is the result of “genuine bastardy”, an assemblage of music and dance cultures, open to bizarre admixtures and unorthodox crossovers. Andreou consciously seeks to expose herself to “the danger of reading”, doubting both the integrity of the creator and the stereotypical view that the stage is an ideal place to showcase positions concerning physical “truth” and “authenticity” of expression.

The choreographer seems to perceive creation as a bastardising process, a necessary and sufficient condition for the investigation and broadening of the subject’s freedom and will, which justifies both the ingenious title “BSTRD” and the bold decision to go beyond easy dichotomies like “what is” and “what is not” the work that she proceeds to present on stage.
