Culture unites us. Even if we can’t hear the bar bell, we don’t hold a program in our hands, we do not touch those sitting next to us, we can watch on the Onassis Foundation YouTube digital channel artistic instances that made history, starting a new life that does not substitute the stage, the shared experience, the applause, yet it can reveal new aspects and form “another” truth. For the Onassis Foundation, culture is a way of life, and unlimited access to it is a right for all, especially now that we are constantly reminded of the value of those things we took for granted.
On Friday, May 1, we take a spiritual road trip guided by Dante, since his Divine Comedy premieres live at 21:00. Argyro Chioti and Vasistas’ performance describes a journey towards the light that starts at April 1300. 720 years later, it arrives at our screens. On Sunday, May 3, at 21:00, the Onassis Foundation digital channel turns into the meeting place of the six friends that are the main characters of Virginia Woolf’s The Waves, directed by Dimitris Karantzas, with the thousands of subscribers to our channel in a live, interactive digital role.
Until May 6, we can watch the intercultural Trojan Women by Euripides at the Ancient Theater of Delphi, uniquely directed by Theodoros Terzopoulos. That same evening, the Onassis Foundation introduces a different film, Marina Danezi’s documentary Scavengers’ Union, about people with different cultures, origins, religions, who live together in peace. The documentary, which accords with the philosophy of the Onassis Foundation to trigger discussions, was provided by courtesy of the director and will premiere live on YouTube at 21:00.
From Friday, May 1, the exciting and touching discussion that took place at the Main Stage of Stegi in 2017 will be added, with Giannis and Thanasis Antetokounmpo in an unforgettable evening, hosted by the Director of Culture of the Onassis Foundation, Afroditi Panagiotakou.
Moreover, the dance/music performance Seven Deadly Sins by choreographer Angeliki Stellatou and musician Stavros Gasparatos is on screen, in a creative coexistence where movement and music were in equal measure, offering a seductive and fascinating encounter with sin. Opera is to the fore with an unusual suggestion by Medea Electronique, since their performance Echo and Narcissus departs from the well-known myth, yet live coding takes the role of the composer and librettist. The Onassis Youth Festival recommends another dream-like show, in which Aggelika Stavropoulou and Stefanos Achilleos’ company Cheek-Bones directs teenagers in Dream³.
The Cavafy Archive keeps on immersing us into the unique world of the Alexandrian poet C. P. Cavafy, with the seminar Seven Poems, Seven Lessons, in which the analysis of a poem turns to an in-depth discussion about Cavafy poetry, while the Onassis Library takes us on a long melodic journey with the discussion Space Sounds and Music.
And the surprises do not end here. The Onassis USA proposes the symposium The Role of the Artist in Society, to drink and think with some of the greatest minds in the world, from chefs and authors to photographers and curators, who speak about the artist’s love for society. Last but not least, the Founding Executive Director of Onassis Los Angeles (OLA) and host of noted interviews at the New York Public Library for years, Paul Holdengräber, presents his conversation with the award-winning author William Gibson – the most significant exponent of cyberpunk, recipient of Hugo, Nebula and Philip Dick awards–, in the context of “The Quarantine Tapes”, namely his 20-minute conversations with various guests about how they experience the global pandemic and social distancing.
