Maria Magkanari

Maria Magkanari was born in Athens and graduated from the Greek Literature Department, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Ioannina, and the Veaki Drama School.

A founding member of "Kanigunda" theater company, she participated as an actor in all of the company’s performances (2005-2013), directed by Yannis Leontaris.

In 2012 she attempted her first stage direction ("Interwar," staged at Katakouzinos House), while in 2014 she founded the theater group προτσές (process).

She has also directed the performances: "Alexanderplatz" based on Alfred Dôblin’s text (Michael Cacoyannis Foundation, 2012; Athens Festival, 2013), "The Beast in the Jungle" by Henry James (Art Theater ‘Karolos Koun’, 2014), "The Fall Sonata" by Ingmar Bergman (Cyclades Street Theater - Lefteris Vogiatzis, 2015), "The Beginning of Evil" by Maria Fakinou (Michael Cacoyannis Foundation, 2017), "Summerfolk" by Maxim Gorky (Onassis Stegi Athens, Youth Stage, 2018), "Tristan" by Thomas Mann (Neos Kosmos Theater, 2018), "Uncle Vanya" by Anton Chekhov (K.E.T. and Bios, 2019), "Nora" by Henrik Ibsen (Municipal & Regional Theater of Ioannina, 2020).

She has written and directed the short film "They Cry When They Kill Them" (produced by the Greek Film Center, 2007). The film was awarded in Greece with the Film Critics Association Award, and distinguished at many international festivals.
