John Eckhardt
John Eckhardt enjoyed classical training with Prof. Jörg Linowitzki at the Musikhochschule Lübeck, while at the same time dedicating himself to Jazz and Improvisation. Grants of the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) made possible his post graduate studies in the US with Robert Black and an increasing focus on modern and contemporary chamber music and solo literature. Meanwhile, he is a member of several ensembles and guest of established groups such as Ensemble Modern, Klangforum Vienna and musikFabrik NRW. He performed at many festivals and recorded extensively, a.o. I. Xenakis’ famous solo piece "Theraps" for Mode Rec. which received international praise. As an improvisor he shared the stage with Eliott Sharp, Evan Parker, Malcolm Goldstein and many others.
At the same time, he continued his work as performer composer. In 2008, his solo CD was released on Evan Parker’s PSI Rec. Eckhardt also realized several sound installations and in 2009 started his club music project Funksteppa, which builds on his live bass guitar playing and his own brand of breakbeat production. John Eckhardt lives within hearing distance of the Hamburg Harbor. Eckhardt has worked with ensemble Intégrales since 2002.
