European jazz has thrown up some extraordinary free improvisers, and the Fernández, Guy & López trio is at the cutting edge of the scene today.

The pianist Agustí Fernández, the bassist Barry Guy and the drummer Ramón López have collaborated on numerous occasions, most recently on "Morning Glory", a poetic recording with six decidedly melodic composed pieces by Fernández and six almost minimalist group improvisations. Low key without being ballads, the composed works have the unforced grace of extemporizations, the improvisations the measured balance of written scores. The combo serves as a bridge between the key trios of the past (Jarrett, Evans, Hancock) and today’s musical quests. Their sound is mysterious without being hermetic, lyrical without being facile, meditative without being dark. This is slow, peaceful, dreamy music.
