Dr. Muhammad Mansoor Mohiuddin

Having devoted himself to xenotransplantation for more than 30 years, Dr. Muhammad Mohiuddin accomplished the first pig-to-human cardiac xenotransplantation on January 7, 2022, at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore, MD. Dr. Mohiuddin is Professor of Surgery and Director of the Cardiac Xenotransplantation Program at the University of Maryland. In the past, he has served as Chief of the Transplantation Sector in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Research Program at the US National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the US National Health Institutes (NHI), Director of the Xenotransplantation Lab at Rush University, Chicago, and currently is faculty member at the universities of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and Rush.

He has been involved in the field of xenotransplantation research since 1991 and has been instrumental in developing the xenotransplantation research programs at the Rush University, the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, and as of now the University of Maryland in Baltimore. Dr. Mohiuddin received his MBBS (MD) degree from Dow Medical College, Karachi, Pakistan and after completing preliminary surgical training at Civil Hospital Karachi, he finished fellowships at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia and the Institute of Cellular Therapeutics (Drexel University).

Dr. Mohiuddin has devoted his entire career to xenotransplantation. Among his professional achievements is the demonstration of the longest survival heterotopic and orthotopic cardiac xenotransplantation. He is currently the President of the International Xenotransplantation Association (IXA), after serving as Councilor for 4 years and as liaison to promote productive collaboration between the IXA and the FDA. He has published over 100 papers, and more than 150 abstracts. Additionally, he has been an invited xenotransplantation expert speaker on numerous occasions. He is Associate Editor for “Transplantation” journal and reviews articles for many other journals. He is also president-elect of the Dow Graduate Association of North America. During his academic tenure, he has received numerous NIH and non-NIH grants. Currently, he is managing over $15 million in grants.
