Studiotopia open call: Selection Results
ARTISTS INVITE SCIENTISTS INTO THEIR STUDIO TO ADDRESS URGENT SOCIETAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES
With 160 applications from over 20 countries, the Open Call for Scientists launched in March 2020 has been a success. Many qualified scientists see a bright future for multidisciplinary exchanges. 25 scientists where selected to participate in the program and will collaborate with 13 international artists and artist collectives who now open their studios to scientists for the duration of 17 months.
Eight European institutions engage and collaborate for a more sustainable future by connecting artists with scientists through the long term STUDIOTOPIA Art&Science Residency program. Artists visit scientific labs and scientists leave their labs to enter the artist’s studio, engage in public discussions, exhibitions and collaborate on common projects.
The aim of STUDIOTOPIA is to raise public awareness and foster creative and critical reflections about actual societal challenges as the rise and plasticisation of oceans, the extinction of threatened species, the climate urgency, clean energy and the future of health and well-being.
Art is a way to make science personal so that hopefully more people would care
Markos K. Digenis works as a marine biologist completing his postgraduate studies in Environmental Biology at the Department of Biology of University of Crete.
He will work with the artist collective “hypercomf”, a multidisciplinary artist identity, materialized as a fictitious company profile, based between Athens and Tinos island. Their current focus lies on the life underwater and especially on the human influence on the marine ecosystem and the anthropological and spiritual connection between humans and the deep sea, a connection mediated through high-end technology, sound and robotics.

This Scientific Committee is directed by Raoul FRESE (PhD, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), Committee Chair, educational program director of the science for energy and sustainability master program, a joint degree of the University of Amsterdam and Vrije Universiteit, founder of Hybrid Forms laboratory.
