Onassis Foundation USA presents the festival "Birds: A Festival Inspired by Aristophanes"
“The Birds” of Aristophanes fly over New York with a festival dedicated to the greatest representative of ancient Greek comedy. The festival's centerpiece is Nikos Karathanos’ “Birds”.
From the Brooklyn Waterfront to Manhattan, Onassis Foundation USA presents the festival "Birds: A Festival Inspired by Aristophanes". The festival's centerpiece is an adaptation of Aristophanes’ classic comedy, “The Birds”, first performed in Athens in 414 BC. Following its sold-out world premiere at the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus and in the Onassis Cultural Centre-Athens, this vibrant re-staging of Aristophanes’ ancient comedy directed by Nikos Karathanos travels to New York City for its American debut (2-18.5.2018).
The production at St. Ann's Warehouse is the foundation of a broader festival of art exhibitions, talks and events for all ages at prominent cultural venues around New York City that examine the literal as well as the figurative power of Aristophanes' Birds in art, science, literature, democracy and the building a new utopia.
