Introduction

The cutting-edge duo of Uitti and Davis takes us on breathtaking journey into the secret world of two important composers.

The cutting-edge duo of Gareth Davis & Frances-Marie Uitti is coming to the Onassis Stegi, offering to the public a musical experience that knows no borders or limits. Taking as their stating point works of two great Italian composers of the twentieth century, namely Giacinto Scelsi (1905–1988) and Salvatore Sciarrino (b. 1947), the soloists transform the original works through new approaches to interpretation. At the same time, they explore the crux of their thematic structures.

Sharing a common perspective on music, the two musicians have been collaborating since 2010. For decades, cellist Frances-Marie Uitti has been enthusiastically received by audiences and critics not only because of her collaboration with legendary composers, such as John Cage, but also due to her unique presence on stage. This is clearly reflected on her incredible ability to simultaneously play with two bows. On his part, Gareth Davis has managed to forge new paths for the clarinet year by year. His journey has been marked by the ease with which he has engaged with different kinds of music, from electronic to classical music.

At the core of the concert is the eclectic affinity between performers and composers, which becomes clear through the works composed especially for the performers; for instance, “Ave Maria”, “Pater Noster”, and “Alleluia” in the case of Scelsi and “Let me die before I wake…” and “Ai limiti della note” in the case of Sciarrino. Plunged into the hidden world of the composers, the audience is taken on a journey by the two musicians who offer new interpretations and approaches to the works, in what is a breathtaking journey that turns into a compelling musical experience.
