An archive open to all

The Onassis Foundation announced the publication of the digital collection of the Cavafy Archive, with more than 2.000 digitized archival documents, accessible to all. Through this digital collection, the visitor can navigate through Cavafy’s rare world from a computer or even a mobile screen. What is more, the digital collection is both available in Greek and English, thus it addresses audiences on a global level, just like the poetry of C. P. Cavafy. The Onassis Foundation’s vision for the Cavafy Archive, which was acquired at the end of 2012, is strongly linked to free access and the support of archival education. The design and implementation of a digital collection, open to all, is part of this vision.

During the presentation of Cavafy Archive’s new era, the President of the Onassis Foundation Anthony S. Papadimitriou, stated that “it was a clear goal to respond to the invitation for an open and accessible archive for all. […] Our still standing pursuit is [for the Cavafy Archive] to remain accessible to the public and the researchers, but also for his poems to spread all over the world. In my opinion, we can guarantee, both. Today we take pride at our work, creating the right conditions for an archive accessible to all, with the Digital Collection”. Beyond the digitization of the archive, the Onassis Foundation will be soon opening a new space in downtown Athens, where the library of the Alexandrian poet will be hosted. The president of the Onassis Foundation, Anthony S. Papadimitriou announced that “we have been investing in both material and intellectual resources for a long time in order to present and highlight the archive itself in an space of culture and education, accessible to everyone. It is an investment not only about the past and the present, but also about the future of Athens' cultural development. The construction of a building that the city needed will add another international cultural heritage site, open to the residents, the scholars, the visitors.”
