Athanasios Psalidas | Publication of selected archival material and editions
Two hundred years after the Greek Revolution first broke out, back in 1821, this new book published by the Onassis Foundation and the Onassis Library is shedding fresh light on the work, action, and thought of Athanasios Psalidas, a teacher, intellectual, and author of the Modern Greek Enlightenment inextricably connected to the shaping of educational activity, radical thought, and politico-revolutionary action, all for lifting up the “fallen people” that were the Greeks living under Ottoman rule.
This special volume on the work and legacy of Athanasios Psalidas constitutes a fine addition to the Onassis Foundation’s growing collection of publications. On the occasion of the 200th anniversary since the start of the Greek war of independence, we are paying tribute to one of the most important figures of the Modern Greek Enlightenment, a man who helped bring about the spiritual reawakening of the Greek people, and the attainment of their freedom. The aim of this book – achieved though the presentation of handwritten archival documents, and the published works of Athanasios Psalidas – is to transport the reader into a multi-dimensional setting that explores the private and public lives, teaching endeavors, politico-revolutionary action, writings, and published oeuvre of a rounded intellectual of the Modern Greek Enlightenment, who made his philosophical framework and beliefs tangible through his actions and bearing.
This publication builds on the popular exhibitions of Athanasios Psalidas’ books and documents presented in 2019 at the Onassis Library in Athens, and in 2020 at the General State Archives of Greece (Historical Archives – Museum of Epirus) in Ioannina.
Researchers, academics, university students, and the general public.
