Digital material | Composing Sounds through Digital Apps

Educational material in digital form

From the sounds that surround us to acoustic memories and “contemporary music” creation. You do not need to be a musician to open this digital handbook. As long as you are open to listening to the sound of your students.

The educational material “Composing Sounds through Digital Apps” is addressed to teachers who want to discover sound with their students, to produce recordings inside and outside the classroom and to compose music with digital tools.

What do the words “sound”, “soundscape” and “listening” mean? What does the term “contemporary music” include and what is the art of sounds? In the first section of the handbook, we approach these concepts as a way of introduction to the world of music. The second section is followed by activities that could form the axis of a complete workshop. Practice your hearing by listening and recording the sounds around you, recollect auditory memories with your students, understand the close relation between emotions and sounds, and learn recording techniques to compose your own work as a group, which can be connected with other artistic school activities.

By approaching sound and music interdisciplinary, we suggest a series of actions that do not require knowledge of music. Artistic discovery is our main intention, with the ultimate goal of enhancing expression and communication, through engaging in new artistic pursuits and forms of expression.

Educational material

Addressed to secondary school teachers.

Teachers and students are not required to have prior knowledge of music or electronics.

The handbook was developed as supporting material to the educational program “Composing Sounds through Digital Apps” carried out by the Onassis Foundation in 5 secondary schools in the school years 2018-19 & 2019-20. The educational program and supporting material is part of the European network INTERFACES, co-funded by the European Union’s “Creative Europe” program, which brings together nine partners from eight European countries and aims to bring contemporary music to a wide range of young audiences in Europe.
Compose with Sounds

The “Compose with Sounds” software, which can be used as a key composition tool in the “Composing Sounds through Digital Apps” educational program, was developed by the Music, Technology and Innovation Research Center (MTIRC) of De Montfort University in England.
