NOWNESS

To complement Onassis Stegi’s public art program, Plásmata: Bodies, Dreams, and Data, global video platform NOWNESS has curated a selection of films that considers the freedom-giving power of ’the body’. Showcasing established and rising filmmakers from South Africa, The Congo, Egypt, France, the US, and the UK, this program touches on environmentalism, digital culture, diasporas, and women’s liberation from new, intrepid perspectives.

These filmmakers blend boundaries, queer narratives, and posit new connections between the individual and the whole, the communal and the personal. All of which are aesthetically amplified through dance, animation, video art, and documentary profiles to reveal the human body as an unyielding instrument of self-expression.

Together with Nowness, we’ve created what we like to call Algo-Free Cinema, to be presented at Cine Aliki: a series of Instagram videos transferred from a small private screen for one to a big public screen for many – a screen we can all watch together as one. And, above all, without there being an algorithm in place to specify what it is you’ll see, and how. What emerges is the need for a digital self-determination of the body: if, when, and how our bodies will exist once hooked up to the digital realm.

Program curated by NOWNESS for the “Plásmata: Bodies, Dreams, and Data” exhibition.
