Libraries, books, archives, and other cultural artefacts are being threatened by the climate crisis and other natural disasters. But what can you do about it? What can we achieve together? As environmental issues intensify, libraries and archives are increasingly facing the threat of natural disasters. This unique workshop places school students at the very heart of conserving archival items and books, teaching them practices that are useful for a future that’s sadly closer than we might imagine.

One of the more unexpected long-term repercussions of the climate crisis is the loss of cultural heritage due to ever more frequent and devastating natural disasters. In this workshop, school students are provided with information to raise their awareness of such issues, and taught ways of maintaining and saving archives and libraries that are under threat due to extreme natural phenomena.

But how does the ongoing climate crisis herald the imminent destruction of archives and books? How can they adapt, and what preventative measures are libraries and cultural institutions implementing across the globe?

This workshop doesn’t just talk theory – it also gets practical, with students getting to grips with techniques for the preservation and conservation of archival documents and books, and using them to save a library in a simulation exercise before they go.
