Neos Kosmos, the unique Athens neighbourhood, is to serve once again as the starting point for an unpredictable musical journey from Ochi Paizoume and the ARTéfacts ensemble.
How can a neighbourhood-archive be turned into music? And how can this music reflect the history and essence of the neighbourhood in its turn? In this new musical experiment, the Onassis Stegi invites and challenges Ochi Paizoume and the ARTéfacts ensemble to give us their answers to these questions.
A field of intense research and artistic activity on the part of Ochi Paizoume and the UrbanDig Project, this New World (Neos Kosmos) has been subject to an aesthetic, historical and sensory mapping leading to the creation of a rich and vibrant cultural archive. For this concert, the groups which formed to carry out the mapping, and which collaborated in doing so, rework the archive material to create six dramatized routes through Dourgouti (the old name for Neos Kosmos) and its archive.
These routes were the ‘libretti’ given to the composers Dimitris Andrikopoulos, Panayiotis Kokoras, Giannis Kyriakidis, Esthir Lemi, Nicolas Tzortis, who created five a musical works for the routes so that the ARTéfacts contemporary music ensemble to play them.
To coincide with the concert, Ochi Paizoume will curate and stage an exhibition at the Onassis Stegi of the material produced, which will include the experience of visually navigating Dourgouti with the help of Clio Muse, a digital tours application. There will also be a new dance performance on the streets of Neos Kosmos which, inspired by this collaboration, will provide the neighbourhood with a new in "situ" cultural experience.
