Have you ever seen a 25-metre long string instrument? Can traditional music coexist with noise? Is it possible for a symphonic orchestra to be more radical? Following New York, Glasgow and Tel Aviv, the festival that defies genres comes to Athens.

“How can an orchestra, the 19th-century beast, be more radical and experimental?” Taking this question as its starting point, Tectonics Festival has travelled to Glasgow, New York, Oslo, Reykjavik, Adelaide and Tel Aviv, breaking down sound barriers along the way and bringing together seemingly incompatible musical practices. The Festival is the brainchild of the celebrated conductor Ilan Volkov and started out in 2012 in Iceland—the only point on the globe where the tectonic plates of Eurasia and North America meet on land. It has been subjecting the map of 21st-century musical idioms to seismic shocks ever since.

At Tectonics Athens, symphonic works, free improvisation, noise, chamber music, sound installations and folk music will be coming together, clashing and complementing each other over three days where everything is possible. The collaboration between Ilan Volkov and the Athens State Orchestra lies at the heart of the Festival, with the celebrated Israeli maestro and festival curator conducting the orchestra in works by Jani Christou, Morton Feldman, Yannis Kyriakides and Christopher Fox.

In parallel, acclaimed artists from the international music scene will be joining forces with Greek musicians to explore various trends in contemporary music in a series of performances at the Onassis Stegi and at the building of Diplareios School.
