How long to find yourself inside the minds of Jozef Frucek and Linda Kapetanea (RootlessRoot)?

Filmmakers Andreas Loukakos and Sofia Sfyri present a video whose title – “I Am a Hunter” – is taken from the lyrics sung live by Martha Frintzila during the course of the performance. It cannot be described as a documentary, or simply as “Stones & Bones” behind-the-scenes footage – instead, the video promises to draw each and every viewer into the core of a work that is still waiting to create and awaken memories and emotions in audiences who will someday see it performed live.

The performance – an Onassis Stegi production – began rehearsals at the start of 2020 and was to have premiered in April that same year. Three weeks before its scheduled premiere on the Onassis Stegi Main Stage, all preparations came to a halt due to the pandemic, and this turn of events was repeated once more in the fall, when all performance venues in Greece were shuttered. “Stones & Bones” has yet to appear on stage in front of a live audience, though a filmed version was screened for 24 hours on the Onassis Foundation YouTube Channel.

In this new work by RootlessRoot, their fourth to be presented at Onassis Stegi, five female performers, accompanied by live music, pit themselves on stage against marble to carve out a poem on the fragile nature of human existence and the eternal nature of rock. At the heart of this performance lies the concept of memory, and this video was created to keep it alive as part of its own history and creation via a series of mini-interviews with its creators, scenes drawn from early rehearsals, footage shot at Greek quarries, and moments from the cinematic version of the performance filmed on the Onassis Stegi Main Stage.

“The worst thing that can happen to a person is to forget. To forget who they are. To forget their own identity.”

– Jozef Frucek

Thomas and Peter Randall-Page – who, in collaboration with RootlessRoot, created the enormous marble boulders that use their size and weight to play a leading role in the piece – describe the experience and, moreover, the importance of creating genuine marble volumes for a performance, and not just objects that look like marble boulders.

“It is set design, but the scenic action is not fake. The body cannot simulate the effort required to move something so heavy.”

– Τhomas Randall-Page

“For me, a performance is complete the moment it is seen by audiences.”

– Linda Kapetanea
