“The Cooking-with-Nadi Show” is a new cooking channel on YouTube. Nadi Gogoulou is a dancer no more. As the influencer Nadi the Cook, she’ll be making her debut by cooking the channel’s first recipe live, with the help of her followers.

Dancer, cook, or influencer? Whatever the case may be, this online project by Nadi Gogoulou is coming to combine dance with cookery and social media in 20 moves. Because “The Cooking-with-Nadi Show” started out as an Instagram account, with daily photos and stories posted over 20 days inviting followers to take part in polls to determine 20 ingredients: everything from their favorite fruit to the one basic ingredient their kitchens can’t do without. The project culminates in a dance-food film lasting 20 minutes. Meanwhile, the recipe finally undertaken is prepared live in front of viewers.

“Nadi enjoys life and every beat of it. C👀king is her strongest element. Follow Nadi for tricks and tips in the kitchen!”: this is how she introduces us to her new Instagram account. And she wonders: “How fancy can virtual cooking become? How many tips and tricks can be shared so that cooking and food can ‘fit’ online, making use of the qualities by which dance ‘fits’ online? Both the rules and techniques for managing movement in a choreography of food, and the ingredients needed to prepare a recipe. How does a dance performance vocabulary translate into the vocabulary of a recipe enacted? By counterpointing the performance of a recipe with the performance of a dance, the selection of cooking ingredients with the selection of movements for a choreography, and the make-up of a recipe with that of a choreography, Nadi is attempting to make food dance. What would life be like if food were dance?”

Nadi Gogoulou’s main role in this project is not that of a dancer. But in tribute to this capacity of hers, she is preparing the choreographed enactment of a recipe in a surrealist vein that unites conceptions of movement with gastronomy. As Nadi the Cook, she cooks, films and edits, whereas Nadi dances, choreographs and curates.

The project flirts with what is real and what is fake, entering into discourse with the personal, the private, and the public. Everything unfolds in Nadi the Cook’s kitchen, in her private space, and is shared publicly online. While in her own space, how personal can she really be when she is also public and live on the Internet? How close can she get to her followers (intimacy) when they all only ever meet online (virtually)?

One final thought on the relationship between food and bodies: “Food and movement reflect the stories of the people who created them, through their traditions and specific practices. In these stories, the tools that are used contain and embody the histories of the eras in which they were created, and the people that lived in those times. Cooking and choreographic methods and techniques are jars of knowledge passed down from one generation to another. What knowledge will we be handing over to those coming next?”
