Ioannis Papantoniou
Professor, division of Skeletal Tissue Engineering, KU Leuven, Belgium
Ioannis Papantoniou (b. 1980, Thessaloniki) is an Associate Professor at KU Leuven, Belgium. He is head of the Tissue Engineering Lab, Department of Development & Regeneration. He is also a visiting Researcher at the Institute of Chemical Engineering Sciences, Foundation for Research & Technology Hellas, Greece. He is a Chemical Engineer by training (Diploma University of Patras) that subsequently carried out his doctoral studies in Biochemical Engineering, University College London funded by an IKY scholarship while his post-doctoral studies were caried out at KU Leuven and supported by the Flemish Research Council Funding. He is coordinator of the EU H2020 project “Jointpromise” and has been involved in numerous national and international research projects. He has published to date more than 50 publications in peer reviewed journals (such as “Advanced Science,” “Biomaterials,” “Biofabrication”) and has been invited in numerous international scientific conferences. He is currently supervising five PhD students and three Postdoctoral Researchers. Through his research he has ‘differentiated’ towards a transdisciplinary domain where engineering meets biological research targeting the development of novel health applications in regenerative medicine. He is inspired by limb morphogenesis during embryonic development and its translation into clinically applicable solutions through adoption of automation technologies such as bioprinting and bioreactors. He is always intrigued in exploring untraveled trajectories by interfacing his scientific expertise with other domains such as design and art.
