Anis Fariji
Anis Fariji was born in Morocco and is preparing his doctoral thesis in Musicology at the University of Paris-VIII under the supervision of Jean-Paul Olive. Entitled “The issue of Modernism in contemporary Arab art music”, his thesis is a continuation of his post-graduate research into musical tradition in the Arab world and its decline. While researching his MA dissertation, he stayed at the Center du Patrimoine Musical Libanais in Beirut as a visiting scholar. His doctoral thesis has been funded by the Édouard Glissant scholarship he was awarded in 2013.
He is simultaneously preparing an MA dissertation in Anthropology-Ethnomusicology at the University of Paris-X-Nanterre under the supervision of Jean Lambert. The dissertation focuses on musical improvisation and its links to the divine, and Fariji has conducted anthropological field research in Morocco, in which he observed the practice of reciting from the Quran in mosques and madrasas.
Anis Fariji was educated in music practice and theory at the Caen Conservatory (classical guitar and composition), and plays the oud.
