Introduction
Fashion and terror, Fashion and surrealism, Fashion and TV series. For three days, we watch while the experts talk.
Who could forget Hubert de Givenchy’s starring role in "Breakfast at Tifanny’s" (1961)? To what extent is "Kika" (1993) Jean Paul Gaultier’s creation? How great would the "Great Gatsby" (2006) have been if the Prada team had let him dress himself? And if Paco Rabanne hadn’t created the costumes for "Barbarella" (1968?), what would they have called her?
The silver screen and the small screen have always been passionately involved with fashion. Costumes, accessories, uniforms and shoes are essential elements of any film or television experience; they play a crucial role in the plot and can often drive the narrative with their allure. From the most bizarre, powerful and frightening to the simplest, sweetest and most everyday, clothes express the nature of the characters who wear them, creating iconic personalities that remain visually unforgettable. Clothes can narrate a work or play a bit part or the leading role.
"FASHION AND. Film" is the title of the first in a series of conferences which the Onassis Stegi will be staging in collaboration with the curators from London’s Double Decker. It is a conference which peers into wardrobes and designers’ sketch pads, dips into the fantastic world of film and television, and seeks to explore the relationship between the two.For three days, the Onassis Stegi will be aglow with the glamour of fashion and the screen, giving us a chance to attend a series of screenings, discussions, workshops and talks featuring leading figures from the field.
