Introduction
Students with and without autism spectrum disorders change through their encounter with Art.
Special, yet not separate from the others. Unique, but not all alone. Discover the art of “togetherness” and turn difference into an advantage, by joining a group of people with and without autism spectrum disorders. Besides, you don’t need to look like the others to get closer to them.
Art is arguably the only place where difference is rewarded, as it is acknowledged as an asset and not as a defect. Art avoids isolating unique people and is never scared by the special ones. This is why highly functional students that are placed in or beyond the spectrum of autism are found together in an art and communication workshop.
Voice, touch, color, movement, and contact become the main tools for discovering your own uniqueness and respecting one’s difference. If you sing towards someone’s body, if you allow them to use you as a drawing canvas, if you stand with your back against someone else’s back, so that you can dance together, or even if you practice some stretching in sync with others, will your possible differences (or the nature of these differences) matter that much?
