Introduction

Awareness Lectures for City of Athens Municipal Police Personnel

It is thought that one in 68 people are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This number has been rising to epidemic levels over recent years, though it is not clear what lies behind this increase. Early and intensive interventions made by highly-trained professionals can, however, support healthy development in a percentage of children with ASD. Nevertheless, it should be noted that the majority of those diagnosed with ASD will require limited or continued support throughout all the developmental stages of childhood.

As part of Athens’ Disability Awareness Week, the Onassis Foundation is organizing – in collaboration with the City of Athens – lectures on autism, and on the obstacles children and adults with ASD face, in order to raise awareness among Athens Municipal Police personnel. This training helps those taking part to identify problematic behaviors that may in fact be due to autism spectrum disorders.
