Politics in the lyrics of Greek songs

The Hellenic Project held its first public talks in November and December 2011 in the context of the Greek songwriting and composition competitions. These initial events featured an impressive array of distinguished composers, lyricists and performers from the Greek music scene, and while the public response amply demonstrated the audience’s enduring love for Greek song, the talks themselves confirmed the continuing importance of Greek song and songwriting in the life of Greek musicians. The song is an art-form in which the link between the creator, the work and the recipient (the audience) is put to the test on a daily basis, and it is this that makes the song both an exceptionally vital art-form and a powerful vehicle for both historical and contemporary culture.
