Spectral music, or a mysterious journey to the centre of sound.

Spectral music (musique spectrale) emerged in the 1970s almost simultaneously in France, Germany and Rumania. Reacting against serialism, composers like Hugues Dufourt, Gérard Grisey and Tristan Murail sought a return to sound as matière, determined to mine dynamic elements out of its structure, timbre and acoustic behaviour.
The result: acoustically rich, technically innovative compositions of considerable finesse. Spectral music cannot be called a ‘school’ in the strict sense of the word; rather, it is a compositional stance and the bringer into being of some of the most exhilarating works of recent decades.
Playing in Athens for the first time, the 2e2m ensemble, which this year celebrates forty years of dedication to contemporary music, and its leader, Pierre Roullier, a key figure in Europe’s new music, will be highlighting the central role played by French composers in the history of spectral music, and their continued importance today. The concert therefore features works by spectral pioneers as well as more recent composers. There will be a short pre-concert presentation of the works by the performers. Language: French/Greek

In the song “Concertino d’Autunno”, Paris-born composer Francesco Filidei has the musicians of Ensemble 2e2m play with bird cries, as well as blow into beer bottles!
The composer Laurent Martin has been invited to undertake residencies in numerous countries, including Greece. His piece “Seraï” (1997) was commissioned by the Institut français de Thessalonique, which invited him to spend time on Mount Athos in 1995 and 1996. He spent his time there staying in a serai, hence the title of the piece, which was first performed by Ensemble Fa in Thessaloniki in 1997.
Gérard Grisey, who died at the relatively young age of 52, studied with some of the most brilliant minds in contemporary music, such as Olivier Messiaen, György Ligeti, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Iannis Xenakis.
The piece “Paludes” by Tristan Murail was inspired by André Gide’s book of the same name.
Ensemble 2e2m’s name derives from the phrase “études et expressions des modes musicaux”, which means “studies and expressions of musical modes”.
