With the Onassis Foundation’s Classroom digital platform as a guide – which was created to support the National Student Competition “Hack the Map: Rigas Velestinlis’ Charta” – we will discover ways to integrate old maps and archival material into the educational process.

The “Great Charta” (i.e. map) of Greece, by Rigas Velestinlis, is among the most significant intellectual products of the Modern Greek Enlightenment, and the leading work of Greek cartography during the pre-revolutionary period. Rare and valuable items of such a kind are usually stored in closed-access libraries, protected vaults, or locked cabinets, for security, maintenance, or preservation reasons. Furthermore, the current textbooks provide only a few insights to the Charta, and lack a thorough presentation of the document itself, but also of its importance for the Modern Greek History.

With the Onassis Foundation’s Classroom digital platform as a guide – which was created to support the National Student Competition “Hack the Map: Rigas Velestinlis’ Charta” – we will discover ways to integrate old maps and archival material into the educational process. We will also navigate through contemporary geography tools, and we will examine how the historical documents and sources provide inspiration for digital educational works.
