Thomas Bellinck’s audio performance "Simple as ABC #3: The Wild Hunt" unravels human hunting stories of today. How clear-cut or reversible are the categories of 'the hunters', 'the onlookers' and 'the hunted'?

The Wild Hunt

A cloud of voices gathers in an imaginary museum. Their bodies are held up elsewhere, but here absent storytellers recount histories of hunting. Some of these voices are heard. Many are not. All narrators are experts of a certain reality.

Theater-makers, journalists, politicians, law enforcement :we are all on the hunt for something. Sometimes it’s people. During this audio performance, you will hear snippets of Arabic, English, Farsi, French and Greek collected from around the Mediterranean. Sampling from hours of recordings, "Simple as ABC #3: The Wild Hunt" pieces together a many-voiced portrait of today’s human hunt.

  • The project, by artist and theatre director Thomas Bellinck, is based on research, collaborative story writing and recorde d interviews conducted around the Mediterranean.

  • The original inspiration for the work came from Grégoire Chamayou’s “Manhunts: A Philosophical History”. In this revealing study, Chamayou offers a history of human hunting from ancient Greece to the present.

  • The Wild Hunt refers to a supernatural phenomenon, the occurrence of which has been reported across Europe since the 13th century. Depicted as a group of ghostly hunters led by either a deity or mythological figure on horseback, the appearance of the Wild Hunt was thought to signal an upcoming catastrophe such as war or plague.

  • “The Wild Hunt” is the third instalment of “Simple as ABC”, a growing series on the Western mobility and border management machine. It follows a theatrical audio essay about cutting edge detection technology and a documentary musical about the digitisation of the European Union’s borders.

  • “Simple as ABC #3: The Wild Hunt” is the second project that Thomas Bellinck will present within the framework of Onassis Fast Forward Festival. The first was “Domo de Eŭropa Historio en ekzilo”, which was presented in 2016 during the Fast Forward Festival 3.
