"The double book" is one of the most important novels in post-war Greek literature; the production uses pared-down means in its quest for new forms of narrative.
After 28 years in exile in Eastern Europe, Dimitris Hatzis (1913-1981) returned to Greece in 1975 after the fall of the Colonels’ dictatorship. The following year, he published “The double book”, one of the most important novels in post-war Greek literature. Tracing the life of its hero, Kostas, Hatzis traverses the history of contemporary Greece not as an observer or in a historical or political way, but by capturing the psychic landscape moulded by these moments in our history. In so doing, Hatzis transforms Kostas’ story into the story of Greece, shedding light on aspects of Greekness which have shaped the country of today, while also making his story universal—a meditation on Man’s place “in the world in which we live today” which is independent of gender, color or nationality. After a resoundingly successful Seagull (the Anton Chekhov's play), its maiden production after being founded by Angeliki Papathemeli, Dimitris Xanthopoulos and Vangelis Hatzigiannidis, the Pequod theatre company returns with "The double book". An original ensemble piece, the production uses pared-down means in its quest for new forms of narrative and meaningful contact with an audience.
