Introduction

How has design contributed on a social, economic, and cultural level, and what are its prospects for the future?

With a view to positioning itself as a point of reference for the Greek design community, Onassis Stegi is hosting a cycle of one-day conferences, events, and open talks aimed at rallying the creative scene and familiarizing the general public with matters relating to design. Given that it is all around us, design essentially constitutes people’s first contact with esthetics – a field it also shapes to a large degree. Objects and spaces that form part of our daily lives, from the chairs we sit on (industrial design) and the restaurants we eat at (interior design), to the newspapers we read or drinks packaging we see (graphic design), are all products of design processes.

While Greek design operates almost entirely outside the public spotlight, it is nevertheless being acclaimed internationally. Greek designers oversee the creation of mass market products, head leading educational institutes, work with major clients, and win high-profile awards. But how has design contributed on a social, economic, and cultural level? And, moreover, what are its prospects for the future? These and other rewarding questions are being asked and tentatively answered by the Design at Onassis Stegi Cycle, hosted in collaboration with +DESIGN magazine.
