London’s Breakfast Club quartet joins forces with a team of architects, photographers, visual artists and actors to invite/challenge Athenians to re-embrace their city’s public space through three urban dérives/concerts.
By charting a contemporary sound-social-map of Athens, the three concert events act as independent but interlinked activities. Participants—public and musicians collectively—will set out to experience the urban environment through events that bring together elements of music, narrative, photography, architecture, visual installations and public dialogue.
Motivated by the contribution their singular breakfast concerts can make to shaping the contemporary cultural life of the city, the Breakfast Club calls into question the traditional relationship between public and artists by providing a creative platform which music and dialogue can share in creative counterpoint.
The Breakfast Club concert repertoire embraces works old and new, with an emphasis on the early baroque and 21st-century works. The ensemble thus perform inter alia compositions by Karlheinz Stockhausen, György Ligeti, György Kurtág, Morton Feldman, Claudio Monteverdi, Johann Sebastian Bach, Carlo Gesualdo, Steve Reich, John Dowland and François Couperin along with traditional melodies from England and Greece and bluegrass from the American folk tradition. Everything they play has been arranged for the Quartet by members of the Breakfast Club.
