Young people from the Future Band of London and from Athens interact as they jam together!
Kids from all over the Greek capital got together at the Onassis Stegi to form a group that would compose and perform their own music. An opportunity to create, share and collaborate through the fun of musical improvisation.
We invited children aged 9 to 13, and representing every level of musical proficiency from beginners to experts, to come along with their sense of fun, their ideas and their musical instruments and join our new band. An open and eclectic ensemble for children in which everyone could express themselves with their own ‘voice’. We experimented, we improvized, we wrote down our music and we are going to perform it for an audience at BIG BANG.
The inspiration for the workshop came from a creative learning model developed over the last six years by London’s Future Band. Future Band is an open and participatory musical ensemble which puts dialogue, reflection and equality at the heart of its creative process.
Working with others! The group from Greece and the Future Band from England swapped ideas and compositions. Their collaboration took the form of an exchange of musical postcards, sound recordings and sheet music.

What sound does a pitchfork make? How can a hot water bottle and a metal sheet create sound effects for a film? “Scratch Bam” and other sounds that objects can make. An interactive audio-visual performance which transports children into the magical world of foley—the art of adding sounds to the cinematic image using everyday objects. In the pioneering sound workshop, which looks more like a domestic kitchen or store room than a studio, children encounter a range of utility objects rather than musical instruments: pots and pans, whistles, staplers, horns, fruit, vegetables, balloons, ball bearings, packs of cards, springs, bicycle bells, hosepipes, typewriters, roller-skates and a whole lot more... Using these, the tools of their trade, two musicians create sounds to accompany a compilation of scenes from animations and old movies. Fast-paced and comic, the images stimulate the children’s imagination and powers of observation.
The children follow the rhythmic lead provided by the two ‘maestros of sound’ and actively participate in a game of knowledge, discovering in the process how sound can embellish a moving line or how an image can answer a pan that goes BANG!

In a little house of distorted perspective, two dancers—a man and a woman whose movements are compressed and grotesque, rapid and distorted—conjure up a cartoon world in which gravity doesn’t work quite like it usually does. The wired stage set turns dancers and props into performers of a musical score and the audience into guests at a Buster Keaton-style last/secret supper. In this playful game of the imagination created out of the dialogue between music, dancers, set and props, everything acquires dual aspects: one rooted in reality, the other in the dream.

What might a musical instrument that looks like a space ship sound like? How many different sounds can a single human body produce via its vocal chords? How could the two interact? How many instruments are there that I’ve never laid eyes on? What images does this conjure up in my imagination? What worlds could an unprecedented musical journey like this one transport me to?
Musicosmos is a musical exploration of the world of sounds. Its goal is to broaden our audio horizons to include new sounds and to take us to distant, magical worlds -perhaps even to a place beyond Earthly sounds. With the help of music and our imaginations, we could find ourselves audio-tele-ported anywhere in the universe.
A miniature world with which parents and children can interact and experience the performance in a way that makes every journey unique.

Come tune in your ears and your imaginations and travel with us around Greece aboard the audio-visual presentation created by the “My landscape in sounds” programme for schools.
The programme participants recorded, processed and illustrated sounds with a view to sharpening their acoustic observation of the soundscapes that surround us and to cultivating creativity through their synthesis.
The primary and secondary school children started out learning to listen closely. They went on to make their own sound recordings using digital recorders, then processed these sounds using specialized software. In parallel, they created visual representations of their sound compositions, grasping the fundamental properties of sound in the process.
The sound installation maps the different landscapes we encountered in the course of the programme in an original way. We will hear sounds from Koulas’ Hill in Serres, from the Old Olive Mill in Eleusina, from Kallithea’s street market, from the Roman Odeon on Kos, all turned into sound compositions by the children. At the same time, their graphic scores and collages reveal the shapes and textures our young artists bestowed on the sounds of a playground, a typewriter, the sea, footsteps...The material was designed to be accessible to the partially sighted and to the blind.

The participating schools were:
Serres’ 12th Primary School, the Kallithea Special Primary School for the Blind, Eleusina’s 5th Primary School and the 2nd High School of Kos.

How many different songs can fit in just one room? Can the songs of the Mongolian steppe share the same space with Eskimo throat singing, Appalachian bluegrass, Pygmy yodelling, Lebanese lullabies, Thessalian folk songs and the extended techniques of free improvisation? Yes they can, because they all reside in the human voice; all they need is to be ‘woken up’!
In a musical room, a maiden lies in enchanted sleep—only the children’s music can awaken her! Alongside her sleeping body, a host of acoustic and electronic instruments; every child is invited to choose one and create their own sound with it. The children’s sounds are recorded and synthesized using live sampling. By the time the music rouses the sleeping maid, the room will be reverberating with a breath-taking vocal collage—a journey through the multiple worlds of the human voice!

Tasos Stamou, the composer of electro-acoustic music and improviser, will be presenting a series of live compositions using children's musical instruments and sound-generating toys along with contemporary means of live electronic music playback. Visitors young and old will have the opportunity to interact with the music during his performances via the various instruments positioned on either side of the stage.
The production shows young audiences how they might put their toys new and old to creative use, as well as introducing them to contemporary electronic music.

For as long as I can remember, I have always wondered what it would be like to be inside a musical instrument! Instruments’ innermost, interior spaces are mysterious, inaccessible places. I remember peeking inside a cello and a piano when I was still a child and trying to understand their secrets; how I longed to go beyond what my eyes could see and my ears could hear! So I closed my eyes and entered this mysterious world, imagining how it would smell and feel, conjuring up its textures and its sounds… INsono is this memory brought to life.
An interactive sound installation as well as a sensory experience, INsono is a space inhabited by a set of objects-acoustic and electronic sound sculptures which invite participants to experience them from both the inside and the outside.

Although Francis Bacon, the 17th-century philosopher, statesman and visionary, is widely regarded as the father of modern science, few know anything about his investigations into the nature of sound. In “Sound House”, the Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments explore some of the musical and seemingly magical phenomena that Bacon sought to explain, playing unusual and historically appropriate instruments including the ghostly-sounding “lirone” and the little-known “viola bastarda”.
In collaboration with the sound designer/composer Jon Nicholls, the members of the Society draw on the unusual characteristics of their extraordinary instruments. Fresh interpretations of 17th-century music are linked together by newly-composed pieces, combining modern sound technology with ancient instruments and exploring the magical effects and illusions -such as echoes and sympathetic vibration- that so intrigued our 17th-century forebears.

“Sound House” was devised by Clare Salaman, who also directs.

In “Mile(S)Tones”, a percussionist, a pianist and a trumpet player take you on a guided tour around the fascinating world of the legendary American jazz composer and trumpet player, Miles Davis. His adventurous, innovative approach to music is the starting point of the production, which leads you into a labyrinth of ever-changing spaces and moods. One moment, you might find yourself in the vibrant creativity of a recording studio or on stage as one of Miles Davis’ backing musicians, the next you could be creating a live soundtrack for a movie or experiencing the atelier where the celebrated musician withdrew to paint.
“Mile(S)Tones” will initiate you into the endless, fantastic possibilities of improvised music through the compositions of Miles Davis. Your guides—Fulco Ottervanger and Simon Segers from De Beren Gieren, the renowned Belgian jazz ensemble, joined on this occasion by the trumpet player Bert Bernaerts—couldn’t be bettered.

“Mile(S)Tones” is a Zonzo Compagnie production in co-production with De Beren vzw, Centro Cultural de Belém, De Werf Arts Centre, Rataplan Arts Centre and Jeunesses Musicales Flanders.
