Borderline 2023 is here. A music event that starts early in the afternoon and offers a taste of things to come, stretching over a weekend guaranteed to have the city dancing until it drops.

A free outdoor stage is set up for the first time at the Municipal Market in the heart of Kypseli. The first day of Borderline is all about crossovers and sonic surprises: genre and tempo-defying DJ sets by DJ NOT I, Spivak, and OJOO GYAL, the constantly shifting grimy sounds of YGRAERIO’s live set, the ecstatic and violent sounds of Lil Mariko, and the intricate vocal stylings of Marina Herlop.

DJ NOT I

Giannis Galiatsos, aka DJ NOT I, is a DJ, translator, and writer living and working in Athens, Greece.

Ygraerio

A post-genre electronic group lurking inside the network cables underneath downtown Athens. Constant experimentation with novel techniques and various sound palettes results in a signature collage-like style, liquid and ever-changing in perpetual motion. Their first full-length album “Real Life” (2022) is thematically inspired by the relationship between performer and observer, premeditated and spontaneous, conscious and dream-state.

Spivak

Maria Spivak (b. 1989, Limassol) is a musician and sound artist based in Cyprus. Her work is a play on the nuances and poetics of pop, investigating themes that allude to her myth-inspiring heritage in a folk-tainted voyage of esoteric explorations. Her debut LP «Μετά το ρέιβ» (After rave), released on Ecstatic Recordings in 2020, is a chiaroscuro blend of hypnagogic pop, smudged synths, and ambient electronics, infused with the spirit of the local DIY scene. Her tape release “Rare Backwards” was presented as an addendum to the LP in the same year.

Marina Herlop

Marina Herlop is a conservatory-trained Catalan composer, vocalist, and pianist. Her work was featured at a number of high-profile events such as Primavera Sound, WOS, and MIRA. Her latest album on PAN, titled “Pripyat,” blends her classical roots with off-kilter rhythms, processed vocals, and dreamlike atmospheres.

Lil Mariko

Rising screamo queen Lil Mariko makes hardcore meme music. Combining the sonic elements of metal, trap, pop, and techno, Lil Mariko has found popularity among the Gen Z/Tik-Tok crowd. Since 2021, she has released deliciously blistering singles paired with music videos, such as “SIMP (feat. Rico Nasty)” and “Boring.”

OJOO GYAL

OJOO GYAL is a Morocco-born DJ, known for her unique and meticulous approach to her sets. Since 2019, she has been playing in venues across Morocco and Europe, blending old-school dancehall, dembow, grime, breaks, and noise with equal parts conscious planning and freeform enthusiasm.

Workshop by MC Yinka | 15:30 - 17:30

Curatorial Practice in Music Festivals

(Free admission. Pre-booking is required to attend the workshop)

In the context of Borderline 2023, Manolis Afolanio (MC Yinka) will lead a two-day workshop on festival curation. The workshop will touch on all the stages of the development of a festival, from the initial concept to artistic direction and artists selection. Drawing from his experience as a musician, he will expand on his unique approach towards curating: the use of narrative devices, lived experiences, the topological and chronological context, and personal connections with people and their stories as tools for curating a festival.

The "Curatorial Practice in Music Festivals" workshop led by MC Yinka takes place in the framework of “Sounds Now” program, co-funded by the “Creative Europe” program of the European Union.
