Stéphane Dorin is Professor of Sociology at the University of Limoges. He also teaches at the EHESS (École des hautes études en sciences sociales) and the CNSMDP (Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris). His research interests are cultural sociology, globalization and participation in the arts. He studied the circulation of jazz in colonial and postcolonial India and the links between Andy Warhol and the Velvet Underground at the Factory. He also conducted surveys on jazz, classical and contemporary music audiences in France. He is the Research Coordinator of the ‘new music and audience development’ survey with IRCAM for the Interfaces project. His major publications in music sociology are “Jazz and Race in Colonial India: The role of Anglo-Indian musicians in the diffusion of jazz in Calcutta” (“Jazz Research Journal,” 2010), “Dissonance et consonance dans l’amour de la musique contemporaine: Les limites de l’omnivorisme musical dans l’auditoire de l’Ensemble intercontemporain” (Philippe Coulangeon & Julien Duval, eds., “Trente ans après la Distinction de Pierre Bourdieu,” La Découverte, Paris: 2013) and “Déchiffrer les publics de la musique classique / Unraveling Classical Music Audiences” (Éditions des archives contemporaines, Paris: 2018).
